Eco-Friendly Commutes: Punjab’s E-Bike Scheme for Students

Lahore: The Government of Punjab has launched the Punjab E-Bike Scheme 2025 under the leadership of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif. The initiative aims to provide affordable and environmentally friendly transportation to students across the province, enhancing their access to education and promoting sustainable mobility.

The Punjab e-bike scheme offers a total of 27,179 bikes to students.

Petrol bikes: 19,000 units

  1. 11,676 reserved for male students.
  2. 7,324 are reserved for female students.

Electric bikes (e-bikes): 8,179 units

  1. 700 for male students.
  2. 7,479 reserved for female students

The scheme specifically targets students enrolled in degree colleges and universities recognized by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) in Punjab. For e-bikes, eligibility is limited to students studying in five major cities: Lahore, Faisalabad, Rawalpindi, Multan, and Bahadurpur.

Eligibility criteria

In order to apply for the scheme, applicants must:

  1. Must be at least 18 years old.
  2. Be a regular student in a degree college or university recognized by HEC in Punjab.
  3. Obtain a valid driver’s license or motorcycle license.
  4. For e-bike applicants, admissions should be done at institutions located in Lahore, Faisalabad, Rawalpindi, Multan, or Bahawalpur.

Financial details

Subsidy: The Punjab Government has allocated a subsidy of Rs. 2.6 billion for this scheme.

Petrol Bikes: Financial assistance up to Rs 150,000.
E-bikes: Funding up to Rs 250,000.
Down payment: Students must pay 30% of the cost of the bike in advance. However, the government contributes Rs 20,000 for this down payment. This reduces the financial burden on the students.
Installment: The remaining amount is payable in simple monthly installments over a period of 2 years.

The process of application

Online Registration: Go to the official portal (https://bikes.punjab.gov.pk) to register.
Upload the necessary documents, including:

  1. The CNIC.
  2. Proof of entry.
  3. A valid driver’s license or driver’s license
  4. Passport-sized photographs
    Bike selection: Choose your preferred bike model from the available options listed on the portal.
    E-balloting: If the applications exceed the allocated quota, the electronic balloting process will determine the successful candidates.
    Financial Examination: Bank of Punjab (BoP) will conduct the financial examination of the applicant and their co-borrower/guarantor.
    Signing of the contract: Successful applicants will sign the installment agreement with the BOP.
    Bike Delivery: Upon completion of the above steps, the bike will be delivered to the student.
