Islamabad: Heavy rain is forecast to persist in different areas of the country; there is a moderate flooding situation in the Indus River at Kalabagh. According to the latest official data, the river situation is being continuously monitored.
After this afternoon, light rain is forecast for some places of northeast Balochistan, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir, says the Meteorological Department in its forecast. There may also be cloudy weather in the neighbouring hilly regions.
The Indus river at Kalabagh is at a moderate flood stage, says the Flood Forecasting Division. This was reported as 390575 cusecs at the site.
The condition of low flood is also present at Chashma, Taunsa, Guddu and Sukkur barrages. The flow of the Indus River and other important waterways is under constant surveillance.
The latest flood bulletin indicates that the possibility exists that rain will occur in the upper river catchments in the future. The rain may increase the water flow in some rivers. Hence, the agencies are keeping an eye on the issue.
The Flood Forecasting Division also had earlier warned of moderate flooding at Kalabagh. The agency had also said that it was looking into the possibility of water level rise in Chashma and Taunsa.
However, today’s weather in Islamabad is expected to be hot and dry. The weather in the capital may be partly cloudy, the Meteorological Department says. High temperatures will be around 35°C.
Karachi’s weather is forecast to be partly cloudy and humid. There is also a possibility of drizzle in some areas of the city.
In the overall situation, both the aspects of rainfall and increased river flow are important. Precipitation in the upstream regions can influence the flow of the river at a later time. People should not needlessly go near rivers and low-lying areas.
