Islamabad: The government has started the registration process to provide relief in the price of petrol to low-income citizens and citizens using small vehicles. The Ministry of Information Technology has also explained how to register and obtain fuel tokens through SMS to benefit from the scheme.
Under the government scheme, eligible citizens owning motorcycles, rickshaws, chingchis and vehicles up to 800 cc will be given a discount of Rs 100 per litre on petrol. However, the discount will be available only up to a fixed monthly limit.
For registration, the citizen will have to send his identity card number and the required information about the vehicle through SMS. According to the IT Ministry, a message will be sent to 9771 by writing REG. Along with this, the identity card number, vehicle registration number, provincial code and date of registration will have to be entered.
After the registration is complete, a separate fuel token will have to be obtained to get the discounted petrol. For this purpose, it has been instructed to write TOK and send an SMS to the same number 9771. The received token can be obtained by showing it at the designated petrol pump.
The government has also fixed a monthly limit of petrol for different vehicles. 20 litres of monthly discounted petrol will be available for motorcycles, rickshaws and chingchi. On this basis, an eligible user can get a maximum relief of Rs 2,000 per month.
The monthly limit has been fixed at 30 litres for small vehicles up to 800 cc. On this basis, the owners of these vehicles can get a maximum benefit of Rs 3,000 per month.
The supply of subsidised petrol will not start at the same time across the country. In Islamabad, this facility has been announced to be operational from the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday. In other parts of the country, it will start from the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday.
The aim of this scheme is to reduce the increasing financial pressure of fuel on the common citizens amid the impact of oil prices in the global market and regional tensions. The government has specifically targeted such consumers who use motorcycles, rickshaws and low-engine vehicles for daily transportation or small businesses.
It will be necessary for citizens to enter their vehicle and identity details correctly during registration. In case of incorrect information or incomplete registration, difficulties may arise in obtaining the concessional facility.
The success of the petrol relief scheme depends on the effective implementation of this system at the registration, issuance of tokens and petrol pumps. It will also be important for the government to provide clear information about the procedure to the citizens so that the genuinely deserving people can easily benefit from this facility.
