Punjab agrees to hold local body elections between December and January

Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed to invite the opposition for formal talks on the issue of electoral reforms and ensure its representation in the parliamentary committee. Five members of the opposition will be included in the proposed 20-member committee, whose names will be sought by the Speaker of the National Assembly.

The Prime Minister has directed to include the opposition in the electoral reform process so that an attempt can be made to build a consensus at the parliamentary level on the proposed changes related to the upcoming elections.

According to sources, National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq will write a letter to the opposition and invite them to join the committee. Through the letter, five names will be sought from the opposition so that its representation in the committee can be completed.

There has also been talk of giving the chairmanship of the proposed committee to the Pakistan Peoples Party. However, the final composition of the committee, the names of its members and the details of the formal notification need to be confirmed separately.

The issue of electoral reforms has come to the fore at a time when differences persist between the government and the opposition over political negotiations and participation in parliamentary committees. Opposition leader Mahmood Khan Achakzai and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan have in recent days expressed concerns about meaningful negotiations and the parliamentary role of elected representatives.

Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari also urged the opposition in the National Assembly on October 29 to re-participate in parliamentary committees and name their representatives for electoral reforms. He argued that the opposition’s participation in parliamentary forums is essential to address concerns over the electoral process.

The main responsibility of the proposed committee would be to consider possible changes in electoral laws and procedures and bring forward suggestions from various political parties. Transparency in the electoral process, concerns of political parties and restoration of confidence in future elections will be important aspects of this discussion.

However, the final progress regarding the opposition accepting the invitation to join the committee, submitting the names of five members and the commencement of regular meetings of the committee is yet to be seen.

The government’s offer to include the opposition in the committee could open the way for consultations on electoral reforms, but the progress of this process will depend on the participation of both sides, agreement on the proposed reforms and practical steps.
