Islamabad: Amidst the fluctuation in oil prices in the global market, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced a new relief scheme for fuel-efficient vehicles. The scheme includes motorcycles, rickshaws, chingchis and vehicles up to 800 cc.
The Prime Minister said that eligible consumers will be given a relief of Rs 100 per liter on petrol. The government says that the aim of this measure is to reduce the impact of global oil prices from reaching the common citizen directly.
The new scheme has set a monthly limit of 20 liters of petrol for motorcycle, rickshaw and chingchi users. Based on this, an eligible consumer will be able to get a maximum monthly relief of Rs 2,000.
The monthly limit has been set at 30 liters for people owning vehicles up to 800 cc. Based on this, consumers in this category can get a maximum monthly benefit of Rs 3,000.
According to the Prime Minister, the scheme is not only aimed at reducing the price of petrol but also at targeting those who rely on their small vehicles for daily travel. In this way, an attempt has been made to channel limited resources to the neediest consumers.
The government has also announced the start of the registration process for the scheme. An awareness campaign will be launched to inform the public about its procedure and eligibility. However, registration and verification of vehicle information will be an important step to get relief.
The Prime Minister said that the practical implementation of the scheme in Islamabad will start on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday. It will be implemented in other parts of the country from the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday. Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan will also be included in the program.
This move comes at a time when the uncertainty in the global energy market is creating additional pressure for a country like Pakistan that relies on imported fuel. The government has already adopted targeted subsidy methods to limit the impact of fuel prices.
The federal government has taken various steps this year to protect consumers from the impact of global changes in petrol prices. However, the current scheme has limited the relief to specific vehicles and monthly usage.
According to him, the provincial governments have cooperated in providing data related to motorcycles, rickshaws and small vehicles for the scheme.
The Prime Minister has said that the government will not leave the people alone in difficult economic conditions.
