Islamabad –The government has once again increased the prices of petrol and high-speed diesel. The price of petrol has been increased by Rs 3.34 while diesel has been increased by Rs 5.27 per liter.
According to the Petroleum Division, the new rates have been fixed for August 19. The increase will be effective from 12 midnight tonight.
After the recent increase, the price of petrol reaches Rs 334.54 per liter. The new price of high-speed diesel is Rs 395.69 per liter.
This increase comes at a time when price and supply concerns in the global energy market remain important for Pakistan. Pakistan relies heavily on imports of petroleum products to meet its domestic needs.
Earlier, August witnessed volatility in petrol prices. In the August 12 revision, petrol was cheaper by Rs 1.70 to Rs 325.92 per litre. At the same stage, high-speed diesel became more expensive by Rs 1.39 to Rs 382.25 per litre.
Later, fluctuations in the global oil market and the regional situation kept the prices under pressure. The government takes into account global prices and other relevant factors for changing the prices of petroleum products.
The recent increase could directly impact the budget of ordinary consumers. The increase in petrol prices could increase the monthly expenses of private vehicle and motorcycle users.
The relatively high increase in diesel prices has a wider impact on the economy. Goods vehicles, buses, agricultural machinery and many industrial sectors use diesel.
Therefore, the increase in diesel prices could also affect the prices of essential commodities through transport costs. However, the magnitude of this impact will depend on the additional cost being passed on by businesses and transporters.
According to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, the annual consumer price inflation in July 2026 was 1.2 percent. In this context, the continuous change in fuel prices is also important for the inflation trend.
On the other hand, the effects of the global market are also significant in oil refinery prices. The refinery price of motor spirit was recorded at Rs 216.93 and the price of high-speed diesel at Rs 279.67 per liter in the data of Pakistan Refinery Limited on August 12.
After the new government rates, the real impact for consumers will be in the amount paid at the pump. The transport and business sectors that use diesel in particular are likely to feel the additional cost more.
After the latest price hike by the government, global crude oil prices, rupee appreciation and import costs will be important factors in the upcoming review. Therefore, future rates will also be linked to the direction of the global energy market.
It should be noted that the official review of petroleum product prices in Pakistan is done according to global prices and related pricing factors. The Ministry of Energy Petroleum Division also publishes prices and related notifications on its website.
