Lahore: The Punjab government has imposed Section 144 across the province, banning public gatherings, meetings and processions until September 17. According to an order issued by the Punjab Home Department, these restrictions have been in effect since September 13.
The government has taken this decision to maintain law and order and protect the lives and property of citizens. During the ban, gatherings of five or more people will not be allowed in public places, highways and open spaces that fall within the scope of the prescribed orders. Recent media reports have also confirmed the implementation of the ban in all districts of the province.
Under the order, there will be a ban on holding meetings, rallies, processions and unauthorized gatherings. Attempts to incite people to participate in any prohibited gathering or gather for this purpose will also be actionable.
Carrying and displaying weapons in public places will also not be allowed during this period. The administration and law enforcement agencies have been directed to ensure implementation of the ban.
However, some important daily activities have been exempted from the Section 144 order. Wedding ceremonies, processions, funerals and burial gatherings will be exempted from this ban. Gatherings for worship in mosques and other places of worship have also been kept out of this order.
In addition to activities related to courts and government institutions, events held with the formal permission of the concerned authorities can also be held as per the prescribed rules.
Police personnel, law enforcement agencies, intelligence agencies and other security personnel performing official duties will also get necessary exemptions.
These restrictions have been imposed in Punjab at a time when various administrative and security measures are underway in the province. Authorities maintain that the temporary ban is aimed at maintaining a safe environment for citizens and preventing any possible unpleasant situation.
Citizens have been asked to obey government orders and not be part of gatherings that have been prohibited under Section 144.
