Tehran Reviews Ceasefire Extension Claims; Qalibaf Links Strait of Hormuz Stability to Truce

TEHRAN – The Iranian leadership on Wednesday delivered a dual message of diplomatic appreciation and strategic warning. Speaker of the Parliament, Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, linked the operational status of the Strait of Hormuz directly to the integrity of regional ceasefire agreements.

Qalibaf argued that for a truce to be credible, it must preclude activities such as maritime sieges that threaten international trade. He warned that once the Strait is closed due to “open violations” of the peace process, its reopening would not be on the table.

Key Diplomatic Developments:

  • Trump’s Claims: Tehran is currently analyzing the various aspects of Donald Trump’s claims regarding a ceasefire extension. No official confirmation has been issued yet.
  • Pakistan’s Role: Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei praised Pakistan for its proactive role in mediating peace in the Middle East.
  • Media Clarification: Reports suggested that an earlier statement from the Foreign Ministry about a ceasefire extension was false; Baghaei confirmed no formal statement has been made today.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry reiterated that its primary focus remains the “protection of national interests and security.” As the region watches the evolving dynamics between Washington and Tehran, the Iranian administration seems to be adopting a ‘wait and see’ approach regarding US-led diplomatic claims while maintaining a high state of naval readiness in the Persian Gulf.
