Pakistan accelerates EV transition with focus on charging infrastructure and battery storage

Islamabad: PM Shehbaz Sharif has issued instructions to accelerate measures for the promotion of electric vehicles (EVs) in view of energy conservation and environmental improvement.

Chairing a high-level meeting, the prime minister said that the transition to electric transport is inevitable in the context of the current regional situation and future energy needs.

He directed the authorities to accelerate the development of charging infrastructure and prepare a policy framework to promote battery storage so that the surplus electricity generated from solar energy can be effectively used.

Furthermore, the government has indicated a limit to all future government transport purchases to electric vehicles, which is a significant change in policy.

The meeting was informed that steps are underway to promote electric vehicles in the country, and several applications for the establishment of charging stations are under consideration, while pilot projects for battery storage are also being prepared.
