WASHINGTON: In a significant diplomatic signal, US President Donald Trump has announced the temporary suspension of a major maritime security initiative as negotiations with Iran show signs of progress.

The announcement, made via Trump’s official social media account, indicated that multiple countries — including Pakistan — had urged restraint and diplomatic engagement following recent military developments in the region.

According to the US president, discussions with Iranian officials have advanced toward what he termed a “final and comprehensive agreement”, raising expectations of a possible breakthrough after weeks of heightened tensions.

However, Trump emphasised that the strategic blockade of the Strait of Hormuz will remain intact. He noted that while security concerns persist, the temporary suspension of “Project Freedom” is intended to create diplomatic space and avoid actions that could derail ongoing talks.

Foreign policy experts interpret the move as an attempt to balance military leverage with diplomatic flexibility. By maintaining the blockade while pausing operational expansion, Washington appears to be signalling both strength and willingness to negotiate.

The development is being closely watched by global markets, particularly in the energy sector. The Strait of Hormuz handles a significant portion of the world’s oil shipments, and any easing of tensions could reduce volatility in international oil prices.

Observers believe that if negotiations succeed, it could mark a turning point not only in US-Iran relations but also in broader regional stability. For now, the situation remains fluid, with policymakers and markets alike awaiting clearer outcomes in the days ahead.
