Washington: An assessment by US intelligence agencies has said that Iran has been able to maintain its large missile capability despite intense air strikes, raising questions about President Donald Trump’s recent statements.

According to US newspaper report, the CIA analysis estimates that Iran still retains about 75 percent of its mobile missile launchers and 70 percent of its missile stockpile.

The report said that Iranian authorities have reactivated underground missile facilities, repaired damaged missiles and have also continued to produce new ones.

President Trump, speaking to reporters in the Oval Office on Wednesday, said that most of Iran’s missiles have been destroyed and perhaps only 18 or 19 percent remain. However, US intelligence reports suggest otherwise.

US officials have acknowledged that Iran’s resilience and defensive capabilities have proven stronger than expected. According to one official, despite the current pressure, the Iranian leadership has taken a tougher stance than before.

Analysts say the situation could further complicate ongoing tensions in the region, while also requiring a new strategy for US policymakers.
