ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced that the presidents of both countries have electronically signed the “Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding” between the United States and Iran, after which the agreement has come into force immediately.

The Prime Minister said in a statement issued on the social media platform X that the agreement was signed by US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Peshmerga, while Pakistan ratified it as a mediator. According to him, the signing at the highest level is proof that both countries are serious about a diplomatic solution to the dispute.

PM Shehbaz Sharif said that under the first phase of the agreement, Iran will immediately reopen the Strait of Hormuz for maritime traffic, while the United States will lift the naval blockade imposed against Iranian ports. This development is being described as of exceptional importance for global energy markets and international trade.

On the other hand, US President Donald Trump signed the agreement during a dinner held at the Palace of Versailles after the G7 summit in France. Several world leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, were present on the occasion. Later, Trump said in a brief speech that the agreement had been signed.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baqai also confirmed that the document had been finalized after the signatures of the two presidents. Later, Iranian officials clarified that since the signing had already taken place, no separate formal ceremony would be held in Switzerland.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in his statement, praised US President Trump’s diplomacy and said that his policy of prioritizing peace helped end a conflict that could have been disastrous for the entire region. He also paid tribute to the efforts of US Vice President JD Vance, special representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.

The Prime Minister praised the efforts of Iran’s top leadership, President Peshmerga and the negotiating team, and also appreciated the cooperation of Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Egypt. He described the role of Field Marshal Asim Munir as particularly important and said that his continuous efforts played a key role in making this progress possible.

According to analysts, if the agreement is fully implemented, it will not only reduce tensions in the region but also bring positive changes in the global oil markets, trade and investment environment. However, experts say that long-term success will depend on both sides implementing all the provisions of the agreement.
