Islamabad: The political atmosphere has once again heated up over the 27th Constitutional Amendment. JUI F Ameer Maulana Fazlur Rehman has strongly criticised the government in a press conference, calling the amendment “unnecessary, controversial and contrary to the independence of the judiciary.”

Maulana said that the government has given the amendment a direction that neither the judiciary nor the political parties can understand by adding some complicated points. According to him, the accountability system is being weakened by adding elements like lifetime immunity in the amendment.

He said that the previous 26th constitutional amendment presented in the parliament had gone ahead with the consent of all parties, while the opposition was completely ignored in the recent amendment. His objection was that “the parliamentary tradition has been that changes in the constitution are made through consultation, but this time a unilateral decision was imposed.”

Maulana Fazlur Rehman also claimed that negotiations with the JUI continued for more than a month, but the government did not include the party’s concerns while bringing the final draft.

According to political analysts, the growing criticism of the amendment shows that there is a serious lack of consensus in the government’s strategy. Experts say that if parliamentary consensus is not established, future judicial disputes and political divisions may deepen.
