Karachi: LPG Markets Associations in Pakistan have announced a nationwide strike from November 16 against the government’s new pricing formula. It has been decided to stop the sale of LPG during the protest, which may cause difficulties for domestic and commercial consumers.
Confirming the decision to go on strike, LPG Markets Association Senior Vice Chairman Ali Haider said that a unanimous decision was taken to protest against the new pricing mechanism in an emergency meeting of all the relevant associations.
According to him, the sale of LPG will be suspended across the country from November 16. The associations say that the new pricing mechanism introduced by the government does not match the business conditions and market requirements.
Representatives of the associations have expressed concern that the implementation of the new formula may increase LPG prices by 25 to 30 percent. According to them, this increase will not only affect business activities but will also put an additional financial burden on the general consumers.
The announcement of the strike has also created concern among domestic consumers. In many areas of the country, citizens use LPG for cooking and other domestic needs due to limited supply or unavailability of natural gas.
LPG is also gaining importance in the commercial sector, where it is used as fuel in hotels, restaurants and other business establishments. In the event of a prolonged strike, the activities of these sectors may also be affected.
The associations have demanded that the government review the new pricing formula and take the relevant business representatives into confidence so that possible price hikes and supply disruptions can be avoided.
However, the government is yet to take a final stand on any alternative arrangement or negotiations after the announcement of the strike. Discussions between the government and associations before November 16 could play a significant role in resolving the issue.
