PTA Issues High-Alert Over Rising Identity Theft and Phone Scams
ISLAMABAD – The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued a comprehensive advisory warning citizens to remain vigilant against a surge in fraudulent phone calls and deceptive text messages.
According to the alert, scammers are impersonating officials from banks, courier services, and the PTA itself to trick people into revealing sensitive personal information. The authority emphasised that citizens must never share their CNIC numbers, passwords, or One-Time Passwords (OTPs) with anyone over the phone or via suspicious links.
The Danger of ‘Free SIMs’ The PTA specifically warned against obtaining free SIM cards from unauthorised stalls in streets and markets. “Providing biometric verification for the sake of a free SIM can lead to the issuance of illegal connections in your name,” the advisory noted. Citizens are urged to visit only authorised customer service centres or franchises for new SIM purchases.
How to Report: If targeted by a scam, users are encouraged to lodge complaints through:
