Islamabad: Recent statements by Iran, Oman and the US regarding the Strait of Hormuz have sparked a new debate on the changing situation in the region. On the one hand, there have been reports of progress in talks between Iran and Oman on a new shipping route, while on the other hand, US President Donald Trump has made new claims regarding the restoration of the Strait of Hormuz and possible talks with Iran.

According to Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghai, talks are underway with Oman on the establishment of a temporary safe shipping route, and the two countries are working to implement the plan. He said that according to the proposal under consideration, there will be a central shipping route while separate routes will be allocated for the entry and exit of ships. However, he also stressed that if tensions persist in the region, a bilateral agreement alone cannot fully normalise the situation.

On the other hand, Iran’s senior military advisor, Major General Mohsen Rezaei, made it clear that Tehran is committed to its security stance and will view any arrangement related to the Strait of Hormuz in the context of its national security. He claimed that several ships have changed their routes after Iran’s warning and that military activities in the region are also being closely monitored. He also made some claims regarding Ukraine and said that Tehran is reviewing the matter.

Meanwhile, speaking to the media at the White House, US President Donald Trump said that he believes the Strait of Hormuz will soon be fully operational again. According to him, negotiations on Iran’s nuclear programme can then be moved forward. The US President once again reiterated his stance that Washington will not allow Iran to obtain nuclear weapons and prefers a diplomatic solution.

The US President also said that contacts with Iran are ongoing and that the process of negotiations is continuing at the request of many countries in the region. According to him, the US wants to give Iran one last chance for any possible agreement, however, if there is no progress, Washington may also consider other options.

According to analysts, the Strait of Hormuz is a crucial passageway for global energy supplies, so any diplomatic or military developments related to it could affect not only the Middle East but also global markets, oil prices and international trade. The current statements reflect the official positions of the various parties, while the international community remains closely watching the situation on the ground and future developments.
