TEHRAN: The Iranian foreign ministry has reaffirmed that the country’s right to enrich uranium remains an absolute and indisputable principle, even as it expressed a willingness to negotiate the specific levels of that enrichment. During a weekly press briefing on Wednesday, foreign ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei emphasized that the right to the peaceful use of nuclear energy is a fundamental entitlement that cannot be revoked through international pressure or the threat of conflict.

This statement highlights Tehran’s dual approach of maintaining its core nuclear ambitions while leaving the door open for diplomatic engagement with global powers.

Spokesperson Baqaei clarified that while the underlying right to enrich is not up for debate, the technical details regarding the “level and type” of enrichment have always been subject to potential negotiation. He noted that any future agreements must ensure that Iran maintains the capacity to continue enrichment activities tailored specifically to its domestic and civilian needs.

This diplomatic stance comes at a critical time as regional volatility persists, and the international community continues to monitor Iran’s nuclear trajectory following the breakdown of previous monitoring frameworks and agreements.

The ministry’s remarks serve as a strategic signal to the international community that Iran remains committed to its nuclear program for peaceful purposes. By distinguishing between the inherent right to technology and the specific operational limits, Tehran appears to be positioning itself for potential talks that could address global proliferation concerns.

As the geopolitical landscape in the Middle East shifts, the focus remains on whether these overtures toward “negotiable levels” can translate into a meaningful diplomatic breakthrough that ensures regional stability and restores international confidence in nuclear non-proliferation efforts.
