ISLAMABAD: Electricity consumers may soon have to pay an additional Rs 1.98 per unit, it has been revealed in a public hearing of the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra). The increase is expected after the negative fuel price adjustment of July ends and the positive adjustment of August is included.
According to Power Division officials, the discount of Rs 1.79 per unit given in September will end while the 19 paise per unit adjustment of August will also be included, resulting in an additional burden of Rs 2.62 billion on consumers.
CPPA-G officials said that the cost of electricity generation in August was Rs 7.50 per unit, which was higher than the reference cost of Rs 7.31. The electricity tariff has been proposed to be increased to make up for this difference.
The officials also explained that the flood had reduced the release of water from dams, which led to a decrease in hydropower generation. To make up for this shortage, the use of expensive imported coal and LNG had to be increased, which made the cost of electricity even more expensive.
