Importance of Islamic Months
1. Muharram SACRED
Urdu: محرم | Arabic: مُحَرَّم
Known as the “Month of Allah.” It marks the beginning of the Hijri year.
Sunnah: The Prophet ﷺ encouraged fasting on the 10th (Ashura) to expiate sins of the previous year.
2. Safar
Urdu: صفر | Arabic: صَفَر
The second month. A time for regular worship and seeking Allah’s protection.
Sunnah: The Prophet ﷺ specifically negated superstitions regarding Safar being a month of bad luck (Sahih Bukhari).
3. Rabi ul Awwal
Urdu: ربیع الاول | Arabic: ربيع الأول
The most significant month for the birth and life of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
Sunnah: A month to increase Salawat (blessings) upon the Prophet ﷺ and study his Seerah (biography).
4. Rabi ul Thani
Urdu: ربیع الثانی | Arabic: ربيع الثاني
Also called Rabi al-Akhir. It is a time for consistency in prayer and character.
Importance: Signifies the growth of the early Islamic community in Madinah.
5. Jumada al Awwal
Urdu: جمادی الاول | Arabic: جمادى الأولى
The fifth month of the lunar year.
History: Associated with significant events and battles in early Islamic history.
6. Jumada al Thani
Urdu: جمادی الثانی | Arabic: جمادى الآخرة
The sixth month, marking the middle of the Hijri year.
Focus: A time to reflect on the passing of the half-year and prepare for the coming sacred months.
7. Rajab SACRED
Urdu: رجب | Arabic: رجب
One of the four sacred months mentioned in Quran 9:36. Known as the “month of sowing.”
Quran: “Do not wrong yourselves therein.” Rewards for worship and penalties for sins are increased.
8. Shaban
Urdu: شعبان | Arabic: شعبان
The month of preparation for Ramadan.
Sunnah: The Prophet ﷺ fasted most of this month more than any other month except Ramadan (Sahih Bukhari).
9. Ramadan HOLIEST
Urdu: رمضان | Arabic: رمضان
The month of the Quran, fasting, and spiritual purification.
Quran: “The month of Ramadan is that in which was revealed the Qur’an” (2:185). Fasting is a pillar of Islam.
10. Shawwal
Urdu: شوال | Arabic: شوال
The month begins with Eid-ul-Fitr.
Sunnah: Fasting six days in Shawwal after Ramadan is rewarded like fasting for a whole lifetime (Sahih Muslim).
11. Dhul Qadah SACRED
Urdu: ذوالقعدہ | Arabic: ذو القعدة
A sacred month where peace and safety were traditionally prioritized for pilgrims.
Importance: One of the three consecutive sacred months used for Hajj preparation.
12. Dhul Hijjah SACRED
Urdu: ذوالحجہ | Arabic: ذو الحجة
The month of Hajj and the Great Sacrifice (Eid-ul-Adha).
Sunnah: The first 10 days are the most beloved days for righteous deeds in the sight of Allah (Sunan Abi Dawud).
