LAHORE: The Punjab government has reinstated regular business operating hours across the province following the conclusion of the temporary relaxation granted during the Eid holidays, with markets and shopping malls once again required to close at 8:00 pm from June 2.
According to official notifications issued by district administrations, the temporary extension in commercial activity that remained in place until June 1 has now expired. Authorities have directed all commercial centers, shopping malls, and markets to comply with the previously notified schedule aimed at promoting energy conservation and improving electricity management.
Officials stated that the revised enforcement is part of broader government efforts to reduce unnecessary power consumption and support national energy-saving objectives. Under the restored regulations, retail markets and shopping centers must cease operations by 8:00 pm, while restaurants, marriage halls, bakeries, vegetable vendors, and grocery stores will be permitted to operate until 10:00 pm.
The administration has also reintroduced restrictions on private functions and social gatherings beyond 10:00 pm. Authorities believe that limiting late-night commercial and social activities can contribute significantly to reducing electricity demand during peak consumption periods.
District officials emphasized that compliance monitoring will continue across urban and rural areas. Inspection teams have been directed to ensure adherence to the notified business hours, and legal action may be taken against establishments found violating the regulations.
Government representatives noted that the temporary Eid relaxation was introduced solely to facilitate increased public activity and shopping requirements during the festive season. With the conclusion of the holiday period, authorities consider it necessary to return to the standard framework established for commercial operations.
The notification, however, exempts essential services from the restrictions. Pharmacies, hospitals, medical laboratories, and medical stores will continue operating according to their normal schedules to ensure uninterrupted access to healthcare services. Likewise, petrol pumps and CNG stations have been allowed to maintain their routine operational hours.
Officials said the government remains committed to balancing economic activity with responsible energy management. They stressed that electricity conservation remains a national priority amid increasing demand and the need for efficient utilization of available resources.
Business communities across several cities have been informed of the updated schedule through local administration offices and trade associations. Authorities have urged traders and citizens to cooperate in implementing the policy, describing public participation as essential for achieving energy-efficiency targets.
Energy experts have repeatedly highlighted the importance of demand-side management measures, including regulated commercial operating hours, as a tool for reducing pressure on the national power system.
