Islamabad: In a major relief for electricity consumers across the country, electricity prices have been reduced by Rs 1.99 per unit, which is expected to provide a total relief of Rs 67.17 billion to the public.

According to an official notification, this reduction has been made as part of the quarterly adjustment, which was decided under the costs and adjustments implemented during January to March 2026. This decision will be applicable to the three-month billing cycle from June to August 2026.

The notification clarified that this relief will be applicable to all consumers across the country, including Karachi consumers and K-Electric consumers. This move is being described as part of the overall cost reduction and financial adjustment in the electricity sector.

According to energy experts, the quarterly adjustment procedure is decided by keeping in mind the actual production cost of electricity, fuel prices and the expenses of distribution companies. On this basis, prices are increased or decreased after each quarter.

According to officials, the recent reduction will make a significant difference in the monthly electricity bills of consumers, especially households and industrial units that consume a lot of electricity. Government circles say that this decision will not only provide relief to domestic consumers but can also reduce business costs.

The notification also states that this decision has been taken under the authorised procedure of NEPRA, and all distribution companies have been directed to ensure immediate implementation of the new rates.

According to experts, the scope for such relief has been created due to the stability in fuel prices in the global market and financial adjustments in the power sector. However, they also say that future prices will depend on reforms in the energy sector and resolution of circular debt.

The announcement is being welcomed by consumers, however, some circles say that structural reforms in the energy sector are indispensable for permanent relief. The government maintains that steps are being taken to improve the energy sector so that long-term stability can be achieved.
