The imposition of an emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has received parliamentary approval after the resolutions were approved by both houses of parliament. The National Assembly and the Senate approved the government resolutions by a majority vote on Wednesday.
Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Tariq Fazal Chaudhry presented the resolution in the Senate. The meeting was chaired by Senate Chairman Yousaf Raza Gilani, where the opposition opposed the government move and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) members walked out of the house.
Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar told the House that it is a constitutional requirement to present the presidential proclamation regarding the imposition of emergency before the Parliament and obtain its approval. He said that the discussion on this issue will continue and copies of the resolution have been provided to the members.
Earlier, the National Assembly had also passed a resolution to impose an emergency. The issue was discussed in the House for more than four hours, in which government and opposition members presented their positions.
The federal government has justified the emergency measure in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa by citing the law and order situation and increasing incidents of terrorism, while the PTI is opposing the measure. Along with political differences, questions related to constitutional powers and provincial autonomy are also being discussed on this issue.
The Senate session was adjourned until 10:30 am on Friday.
