Punjab Launches Electronic Warehouse Receipt System to Support Wheat Farmers

Lahore: The Government of Punjab has launched the Electronic Warehousing Receipt (EWR) system to help wheat farmers by providing financial relief and stability. Under this system, farmers can store their wheat in certified godowns and receive up to 70% of the value of the grain as an advance payment. Which allows them to avoid immediate sales at unfavorable market prices.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has allocated 15 billion rupees to help about 550,000 wheat farmers. The package includes a four-month free storage facility under the EWR system, access to loans up to 70% of the value of stored wheat, and exemption from irrigation and fixed taxes for the current year. Further, a credit line of Rs 100 billion has been established for flour mills and green license holders. So that immediate procurement of wheat from farmers can be facilitated.

Although this move has been welcomed by many, some farmers’ unions have expressed concerns that the EWR system could disproportionately benefit big brokers and stockists. Small-scale farmers who may lack the resources to store their wheat and wait for favorable market prices may be overlooked.

The implementation of the EWR system is an important step in the agricultural reforms of Punjab. The objective is to enhance the overall sustainability and profitability of the agriculture sector. Continuous monitoring and adjustment will be necessary to ensure that the benefits reach all sections of the farming community, especially small and medium farmers.
