New rules on installation of solar panels, Punjab government decides on safety measures

Lahore: After the dangerous situation arising from the recent storm winds in various areas of Punjab including Lahore, the Punjab government has decided to formulate new and strict safety rules for the installation of solar panels.

Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Director General Irfan Ali Kathia has issued an official letter in this regard to the Energy, Local Government and all district administrations, in which immediate steps have been directed.

According to the PDMA, most of the accidents occurred due to solar panels that were installed on roofs or open places without a protective frame and in a substandard manner. Due to their weak installation, these panels fell in strong winds and proved fatal to citizens.

The DG PDMA has said that in future only officially approved standard solar panels will be used and the existing panels will also be thoroughly inspected.

The government has directed the relevant agencies to prepare clear SOPs related to the installation and repair of solar systems so that any kind of accident can be prevented in the future.

This decision is not only to ensure the safety of the public but is also an important step towards making the use of renewable energy safe and sustainable.
