Increase in fines of up to Rs 20,000 for violating traffic rules

Lahore: The provincial cabinet has approved the summary presented by the traffic police, under which heavy fines and suspension of driving licenses have now become possible for violating traffic rules in Lahore.

According to the new system, fines ranging from Rs 2,000 to Rs 20,000 will be imposed for 25 different violations, while 2 to 4 points will be deducted for each violation.

If a driver loses more than 20 points in a year, his license will be suspended for two months to a year.

Earlier, fines ranging from Rs 100 to Rs 500 were levied from citizens, but now the government has introduced strict financial penalties to improve traffic discipline.

According to the details:

A fine of Rs 2,000 to Rs 20,000 for overspeeding,

A fine of Rs 2,000 to Rs 15,000 for breaking the signal,

A fine of Rs 3,000 to Rs 15,000 for rash driving,

A fine of Rs 2,000 to Rs 15,000 for overloading,

A fine of Rs 2,000 to Rs 10,000 for using a pressure horn.

According to traffic police officials, this step has been taken to bring citizens towards responsible driving so that the accident rate can be significantly reduced.

According to urban planning experts, this decision of the Punjab government could prove to be a major administrative change. If it is strictly implemented, there will be a significant improvement in the traffic system. However, some analysts have also expressed concern that the high amount of fines could open new avenues for public resistance or corruption, so transparency in the implementation process is very important.
