Islamabad – In a major development towards the promotion of renewable energy in the country, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has amended the Solar Regulations 2026 to simplify the approval process for solar consumers up to 25 kW.
According to a notification issued by Nepra, the requirement of obtaining separate permission from the regulatory body for solar systems up to 25 kW has now been removed. The aim of this change is said to be to make the approval process of applications more efficient and faster.
Under the new rules, the concerned power distribution companies (DSCOs) have been empowered to directly examine and approve applications that meet the prescribed norms and technical requirements. This move is expected to reduce administrative steps for consumers.
Experts associated with the energy sector say that this change in the approval system can further simplify the process of adopting solar energy for domestic, commercial and small business consumers. According to him, if implemented effectively, the policy could increase the use of renewable energy and reduce pressure on the conventional power system.
According to analysts, the recent amendment appears to be in line with the government’s broader goals of promoting clean and alternative energy. However, consumers will still have to comply with all applicable regulations related to safety, technology and grid connection to maintain safe and efficient performance of the power system.
This move by NEPRA is being seen as an administrative reform in the energy sector, which is not only expected to reduce the processing time of applications but is also expected to further strengthen the growing trend of solar energy in the country.
