National Assembly Approves 135 Grants as Opposition Rejects Budget Cuts

ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly on Monday approved 135 demands for funds under the budget proposals for the fiscal year 2026-27 for federal ministries and affiliated institutions, while 587 cut motions presented by the opposition were rejected by a majority vote. After two days of proceedings, the House is now going to enter the stage of approving the Finance Bill and other financial measures.

During the parliamentary proceedings, the opposition expressed serious reservations about the performance of various ministries, however, the most criticism was directed at the Ministry of Interior and its subordinate institutions.

Speaking in the House, PTI Member National Assembly said that the law and order situation in the country is a major obstacle to investment, while online hateful content is further dividing the society. According to him, crime, terrorism and sometimes actions of law enforcement agencies are also creating difficulties for citizens.

He also raised questions about the registration of cases against political critics under cybercrime laws.  He said that the political leadership should be considered separate from the state so that freedom of expression is not affected.

Pointing out the dire law and order situation in his constituency, MNA from Parachinar said that the main road is opened for only a few hours every day, which is causing severe hardship to the local population.

112 cut motions were also presented regarding the Food Ministry, which included demands such as reduction in fertilizer prices, introduction of insurance schemes for crops and reduction in agricultural costs. PTI Chief Whip said that the agricultural market system is unbalanced for both farmers and consumers, which is having a negative impact on the economy.

During the meeting, some members praised the reduction in regional tensions in the country and the diplomatic efforts, mentioning the end of the conflict between Iran and the US. On this occasion, it was also suggested to reactivate the long-pending project.

After the National Assembly proceedings are completed, the phase of clause-wise approval of the Finance Bill will begin, after which the budget for the financial year 2026-27 will be closer to final approval.
