Lahore: Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) has started the phased installation of modern AMI (Advanced Metering Infrastructure) smart meters in various government departments of the Punjab government in the light of the instructions of the Ministry of Energy. The project aims to integrate the electricity distribution system with modern technology, make the billing process more transparent and ensure effective monitoring of electricity consumption.

According to a LESCO spokesperson, in the first phase of the project, 1,000 AMI smart meters will be installed by August. After this, 8,342 single-phase non-AMI meters installed in various departments of the Punjab government will be replaced with modern smart meters in a phased manner.

The spokesperson said that through the new metering technology, electricity reading, bill preparation and system monitoring will become faster, more accurate and transparent than before. Along with this, electricity consumption data will be obtained automatically, which will also improve the record-keeping and technical monitoring process.

According to statistics, there are 1,811 non-AMI meters of Punjab government institutions in Okara Circle, which is the highest number in the LESCO region. That is why the replacement of these meters has been given priority in the project.

The LESCO administration has directed all its circles to ensure timely supply and installation of smart meters so that the project can be completed as per the stipulated schedule.

According to energy sector experts, smart metering system can play an important role in improving transparency in power distribution, efficient use of energy and administrative efficiency. In addition, the modern digital system can also help in reducing power losses, reducing billing disputes and providing better services to consumers in the future.
