BISHKEK: Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Iranian President Masoud have reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthen the long-standing relations between Pakistan and Iran.
The two leaders said this during a meeting on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Heads of State Summit in Bishkek. The meeting discussed bilateral relations and the regional situation.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif stressed the importance of enhancing cooperation between Pakistan and Iran in various fields. Implementation of the decisions of the recent high-level contacts between the two countries was also considered important.
The two leaders also agreed on the need to take forward the discussions and decisions taken during the Iranian President’s visit to Pakistan in June. The aim is to transform bilateral relations into practical cooperation.
The regional situation was also discussed in the meeting. The Prime Minister said that Pakistan will continue its diplomatic efforts for peace in the region.
Shahbaz Sharif stressed the need for patience and continuous diplomatic contacts for lasting peace and stability. He also highlighted the importance of advancing the reconciliation process under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding.
The Prime Minister also mentioned Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir’s recent visit to Tehran. He said that his constructive engagements can help advance peace efforts in the region.
Iranian President Masoud appreciated Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts for regional peace. He described Pakistan-Iran relations as being linked to a shared history and culture.
President Masoud expressed his desire to further enhance cooperation between the two countries in various fields. He also stressed the need for unity and solidarity within the Muslim Ummah.
The meeting took place at a time when the situation in the region is continuously gaining importance. In this context, direct diplomatic contact between Pakistan and Iran can play an important role in efforts for regional peace and stability.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is currently on a three-day official visit to Kyrgyzstan. He is attending the SCO Heads of State Meeting and the SCO Plus Meeting in Bishkek. Pakistan is also assuming the chairmanship of the SCO Council of Heads of State for 2026-27.
