KSE-100 index drops 721 points as PSX closes lower

Karachi: Trading on the Pakistan Stock Exchange ended on Monday, August 31, with an overall negative trend. The benchmark KSE-100 index closed at 176,975.67 points after a decline of 720.83 points. The index lost 0.41 percent.

The trading day started at 177,616.96 points. During the trading session, the KSE-100 index reached a high of 178,138.69 points, while its low was recorded at 176,944.91 points. However, selling pressure persisted till the end of the day and the index closed below its initial level.

According to Pakistan Stock Exchange data, a total of 569 companies traded shares on Monday. Of these, 169 companies increased their share prices, 302 recorded a decline, while 98 companies’ share prices remained unchanged.

The overall performance of the KSE-100 index was also affected by changes in the shares of major companies. The decline in UBL shares had a negative impact of 246.57 points on the index, which was the largest negative impact from a single company during the day. SYS had a negative impact of 213.09 points, HBL had a negative impact of 160.90 points, LUCK had a negative impact of 73.50 points and PPL had a negative impact of 61.20 points.

On the other hand, the improvement in the shares of some companies provided some support to the index. ATRL had the highest positive impact with 141.14 points. OGDC contributed 80 points, FFC 74.87 points, MEBL 60.76 points and CNERGY 51.09 points.

The KMI-30 index, which comprises prominent companies doing business according to Islamic principles, also closed with a slight decrease. The KMI-30 fell by 141.76 points or 0.06 percent to close at 251,656.83 points. The index opened at 251,610.56 points.

During the trading session, the KMI-30 index touched a high of 253,099.33 points, while its low was 250,497.82 points.

ATRL also had the biggest positive impact on the KMI-30, supporting the index by 402.38 points. OGDC contributed 228.08 points, PRL 217.87 points, MEBL 173.23 points and FFC 144.28 points.

In contrast, the decline in SYS shares had the biggest negative impact on the KMI-30 of 560.78 points. LUCK lost 209.54 points, PPL lost 174.47 points, HUBC lost 107.11 points and ENGROH lost 96.34 points.

According to the data, the calendar year-to-date performance of the KSE-100 index was 1.68 percent positive, while the index’s performance since the beginning of the financial year has been 1.84 percent negative. The calendar year-to-date performance of the KMI-30 was 1.25 percent positive, while the performance since the beginning of the financial year has been 2.20 percent negative.

The data from Monday’s trading session shows that the overall selling trend in the market was higher than the buying trend. However, the improvement in the shares of a few large companies limited the index’s decline to some extent. The direction of the market in the upcoming trading session will depend on the performance of the shares of large companies and the overall attitude of investors.
