ISLAMABAD: Thousands of mourners participated in 9th Muharram processions across Pakistan as authorities made tight security arrangements in major urban centres to ensure peaceful conduct of religious events.
The main procession in Karachi started from Nishtar Park and passed through its traditional routes. Officials diverted traffic and closed parts of MA Jinnah Road to facilitate movement of participants and prevent crowding in surrounding areas.
Security personnel remained deployed at key locations, while surveillance and monitoring measures were increased to deal with any potential security concerns.
In Lahore, the procession of Shabiya Zul Jinnah departed from Imambargah Qasr Batool in Shadman and continued through designated routes. A significant number of mourners attended the occasion, while law enforcement agencies maintained strict vigil throughout the procession.
Officials said that a security plan has been drawn up in collaboration with relevant departments to ensure the safety of the public during Muharram.
In the federal capital, Inspector General of Police Islamabad Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi visited Imambargah Ashna Ashari to review the arrangements and inspect the procession routes. He directed all police units to remain alert and responsive throughout the day.
Addressing the media, the Islamabad police chief said that around 16,000 security personnel have been deployed for Muharram-related duties. He said that police, Rangers and army personnel are participating in a coordinated security operation.
Officials said that a multi-layered security framework has been implemented, which includes route surveillance, restricted access points and establishment of dedicated control rooms. Containers were also placed at strategic locations to regulate movement around the procession routes.
Officials reiterated their commitment to maintaining law and order and urged citizens to cooperate with security agencies. Muharram processions are expected to continue under close surveillance as religious celebrations continue across the country.
