ISLAMABAD: The federal government has decided to phase out the existing machine-readable passports in the country and completely adopt the e-passport system. In this regard, Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has said that this step will provide modern security, compliance with world standards and better travel facilities at airports.

Chairing a special meeting held at the National Passport and Immigration Headquarters, the Interior Minister said that it will be possible to eliminate forgery and fraud by completely adopting the e-passport system. According to him, the e-passport will not only be a secure travel document but will also be based on internationally recognized modern technology.

Director General Passports and Immigration Muhammad Ali Randhawa briefed the meeting on the ongoing reforms. The meeting approved the e-passport system in principle, but no final date was set for the elimination of old passports.

An e-passport is a modern travel document in which an electronic chip is installed that stores biometric data, identity information, facial details and digital signatures. This technology is in line with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards.

According to officials, Pakistani citizens holding e-passport will be able to benefit from the e-gate facility at various airports around the world, which will significantly speed up the immigration process and reduce queues.

It was also decided in the meeting that a completely cashless payment system will be implemented in all passport offices across the country from July 1, which will increase transparency and convenience in financial transactions.

The Interior Minister said that the initial work on the home delivery system of passports for citizens has been completed and this facility will be launched soon, which will facilitate Pakistanis at home and abroad.

Moreover, work is also underway to further activate the Pak ID platform to improve the online application process so that applicants can be provided with fast and easy facilities.

Officials also said that consultations are underway with the Federal Board of Revenue to finalize the policy related to business passports, so as to facilitate the business community and make the travel process more efficient.
