ISLAMABAD — In a move aimed at cushioning the blow of rising energy costs, the government on Tuesday formally announced a daily loadshedding schedule of more than two hours. This decision comes as the country grapples with severe fuel constraints and a desperate need to prevent a sharp increase in electricity tariffs for the general public.
According to a statement issued by the Power Division, the suspension of electricity supply will occur for approximately 2.25 hours daily, specifically targeted within the high-demand window of 5:00pm to 1:00am. By implementing these rolling blackouts during peak hours, authorities hope to reduce the national reliance on expensive imported fuels, which typically drive up the cost of generation when the grid is under maximum strain.
The Power Division emphasized that while the move causes immediate inconvenience, it is a strategic measure designed to protect consumers from the even greater burden of a “sharp rise in tariffs” that would otherwise be necessary to cover the rising cost of power production.
As fuel prices fluctuate globally, the government is prioritizing cost-containment over uninterrupted supply to maintain a semblance of economic stability for households and businesses alike.
