Motorway M5 closed, flood situation serious in South Punjab

Lahore: Due to the flood situation, entry has been closed at various traffic interchanges on the M5 motorway. According to a spokesperson for the Motorway Police, vehicles heading towards Sher Shah from Uch Sharif, Jhangra and Jalalpur interchanges cannot enter, while traffic from Shah Shams, Sher Shah and Shujaabad interchanges towards Jalalpur Jhangra is also suspended. Officials said that there is a risk of cracks due to flood water passing under the motorway, due to which the Uch Sharif highway has also been closed.

DG PDMA Irfan Ali Kathia said that emergency measures are being taken to save the motorway from major damage, which includes the use of sandbags and stones. He said that the water level at Jalalpur Pirwala will decrease in the next 24 hours, while the flow in the rivers is also decreasing. The flow at Panjnad Barrage has been recorded at 392,000 cusecs and at Guddu Barrage at 627,000 cusecs. On the other hand, more villages in Rahim Yar Khan, Shujaabad, Ahmedpur Sharqia, Rajanpur and Vehari have been submerged. The Federal Flood Relief Commission has warned that there is a possibility of higher levels of flooding in the Chenab River and Guddu Barrage in the coming days.
