Islamabad: Another financial burden has come to light for electricity consumers, as the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has approved an increase in electricity prices by 34 paisa per unit across the country. This increase has been made under the monthly fuel price adjustment of May 2026 and will be applied in the electricity bills issued this month.

According to a notification issued by Nepra, this increase will be applicable to the customers of all the relevant electricity distribution companies, while K-Electric customers will also not be exempted from this decision. Thus, consumers using electricity in different parts of the country, including Karachi, will have to pay extra in their July bills.

Earlier, the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) had requested Nepra for an increase of 82 paisa per unit in the difference in fuel cost for May 2026. However, the authority, after reviewing all relevant statistics, production costs and other technical factors, approved an increase of only 34 paisa per unit, which is significantly lower than the requested rate.

According to experts associated with the energy sector, fuel price adjustments are made on a monthly basis based on the fluctuation of fuel prices in the cost of electricity generation. The aim of this system is to adjust the difference between the actual production cost and the price charged to the consumers.

Following the recent hike, domestic and commercial consumers are expressing concern over the rising cost of electricity, while business circles say that the continuous increase in energy costs could also affect production costs and inflation.

As per the decision of NEPRA, the approved fuel price adjustment will be implemented in the bills of July 2026, due to which consumers will have to face a slight increase in their monthly electricity costs.
