Islamabad: To deal with the growing cyber threats in Pakistan, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has expanded its digital investigative capacity and set up a special unit to monitor crimes related to the dark web. Officials say the move is aimed at accessing online networks that may be involved in illegal activities through secret platforms.

According to the FIA, the new unit will operate in the agency’s National Command and Control Centre, where suspicious activities will be examined using advanced investigative methods such as modern digital forensics, blockchain analysis and open-source intelligence. The system will also increase the ability to detect suspicious financial transactions made through cryptocurrency.

The agency says that the special team will focus on elements involved in activities related to fake travel or identity documents, human trafficking, illegal immigration and other federal crimes. According to officials, international cooperation will also play an important role in such cases because many online networks spread across different countries.

According to experts, the dark web is a part of the Internet where access is not possible with normal search engines, and websites located there can only be reached through special software. This secret environment is used by some people to hide their identities; however, this same technology can sometimes be used in illegal activities.

FIA officials say that the digital evidence obtained in the new unit will be combined with traditional investigations to further strengthen cases so that law enforcement agencies can take action based on evidence. According to them, the use of modern technology will help make cybercrime investigations more effective and faster.

Digital security experts say that the methods of cybercrime are changing rapidly around the world, so investigative agencies should also promote modern technology, training and international contacts. According to them, such measures can help in further strengthening the cybersecurity system in the future.
