Lahore – The federal government has made significant changes in the prices of petroleum products. From August 20, 2026, the price of petrol will increase by Rs 2.97 per litre, while high-speed diesel has been reduced by Rs 32.63.
According to a notification issued by the Petroleum Division, the new price of petrol has been set at Rs 337.51 per litre. High-speed diesel will now be available at Rs 363.6 per litre.
The decision has also significantly reduced the difference between petrol and diesel prices. A reduction of more than Rs 32 in the price of diesel in a single revision is a significant change for consumers.
The government has taken this decision at a time when the global energy market is experiencing unprecedented volatility. Pakistan has also changed the period for determining petroleum prices in recent weeks.
Under the new system, OGRA calculates prices by looking at global oil prices, exchange rates and other related costs. The government approves local prices on this basis.
Recent prices have also seen continuous changes. On August 14, the government increased petrol by 45 paise and high-speed diesel by Rs 1.16 per litre. At that time, petrol was Rs 325.43 and diesel was Rs 383.95 per litre.
Earlier, petrol and diesel prices were changed several times in August. This fluctuation shows that the impact of global prices is now being transmitted to the local market more quickly.
The current decision has given major relief on diesel, unlike petrol. Diesel is widely used in transport, agriculture and various industrial activities. Therefore, the effects of a significant reduction in its price can reach many sectors of the economy.
A reduction in the costs of freight vehicles could be an immediate potential impact of this decision. Similarly, consumers operating agricultural machinery and tube wells can also benefit from relatively low fuel costs.
However, the full benefit of diesel being cheaper may not be seen in the form of an immediate reduction in the prices of essential commodities. The magnitude of the reduction in supply chain, fares and other business costs will also play an important role.
On the other hand, the increase in petrol prices may increase the monthly travel expenses of ordinary citizens. The impact of this decision on private vehicles, motorcycles and urban transport will vary according to the nature of use.
Government revenues are also an important factor in this price difference. In the previous prices of August 14, the government was collecting taxes and duties of Rs 114 per litre on petrol and Rs 100 per litre on diesel.
The detailed calculation of actual price formation in the current revision and the updated details of taxes should be seen from the full text of the notification. The change in consumer price alone does not clearly show the separate impact of global price, taxes and other components.
This change carries two different messages for the economy. A major reduction in diesel can help reduce production and transportation costs. On the other hand, the increase in petrol will put a slight additional pressure on the consumer budget.
The Pakistan Bureau of Statistics includes petroleum products in the main consumer price indices. Changes in fuel prices can therefore also affect the overall inflation trend.
The real challenge for the government is to provide adequate relief to local consumers in the face of global market fluctuations. Changing prices daily or at short intervals can increase transparency. However, it can also make business planning difficult.
Under the new prices, consumers will get petrol at Rs 337.51 per litre and high-speed diesel at Rs 363.6 per litre from August 20. The global market, import costs and other pricing factors will again be important in the next revision.
