Islamabad: In a historic development for the people of Gilgit-Baltistan, the formal abolition of the Dogra Rag law has come into effect, as a result of which the local residents now have the right to regular ownership of their lands. This move is not only the end of an old and controversial law. But it is also an important step towards the restoration of public rights.
Chairman Pakistan Peoples Party Bilawal Bhutto Zardari welcomed the decision and said that this achievement is the fruit of the long struggle of the people of Gilgit-Baltistan, public consciousness, and the determination of the political leadership. According to him, this is a right that the locals had been deprived of for decades, and now their patience and efforts have paid off.
Bilawal Bhutto also clarified on the occasion that the issue of ownership of lands in Gilgit-Baltistan was not merely legal or administrative in nature, but it was related to basic human rights. According to him, this is a step that will lay the foundation for the socio-economic stability of the local people.
He said that in this legislation, the role of not just one party but all the government coalitions and political parties is commendable. This process has proved that when it comes to national interest and public welfare, consensus is possible despite political differences.
The Pakistan Peoples Party chief assured that his party would continue to stand by the people of Gilgit-Baltistan and raise their voice for their constitutional and legal rights. He said that this is just the beginning, and more reforms will be carried out as per the aspirations of the people.
