Lahore: The Punjab government has decided to ban the use, purchase and sale of items equipped with hidden cameras and recording devices to protect the privacy and personal information of citizens. The proposed ban includes smart glasses, pens, watches and other electronic devices that can be used for secret recording.

This decision was taken in a meeting of the provincial cabinet chaired by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. Provincial Information Minister Uzma Bukhari told the media that the move is aimed at protecting women and children from illegal surveillance and harassment, especially.

According to the Punjab Home Department, complaints have been received about surveillance, harassment and blackmailing of people without their consent through secret recording devices. Officials say that the misuse of such devices can affect the private information and fundamental rights of citizens.

The government has made it clear that strict legal action will be taken against those involved in the illegal use, purchase and sale of spying equipment and secret electronic devices. However, details of the specific penalties applicable to violations and the complete legal procedure for the ban are yet to be revealed.

Punjab Home Secretary Ahmed Javed Qazi told Dawn that a formal notification to implement the ban will be issued in a few days. According to him, the aim of announcing the decision earlier was to give people time to prepare and be aware of the government’s move regarding such items.

The development comes amid growing concerns over the sale of smart glasses equipped with hidden cameras and microphones and their potential misuse. A petition against the unregulated import and sale of these devices is also pending in the Lahore High Court, raising the issue of protecting the privacy, dignity and security of citizens.

The practical scope of the proposed ban will become clearer after the formal notification. At this stage, it will be important to see to which specific devices the law will apply and what conditions are set regarding permissible use, import and sale.
