Pakistan appeals to US and Iran for restraint

Islamabad: Pakistan has expressed deep concern over the rapidly changing security situation and rising tension in the Middle East and urged the US and Iran to exercise restraint and avoid such steps that could lead to further instability in the region.

The statement issued by the Foreign Office said that the current situation could become sensitive not only for the region but also for global peace; therefore, all relevant parties should exercise responsibility and avoid escalating tensions. Pakistan is of the view that any new conflict will not benefit any party, while its effects may have an impact on the peace, economy and stability of the entire region.

The statement emphasised that negotiations, diplomacy and continuous engagement are the most effective ways to resolve differences. Pakistan said that all parties should adopt political and diplomatic means instead of confrontation to establish lasting peace and mutual trust.

The Foreign Office further said that Pakistan expects all parties concerned to respect their commitments and obligations under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding. According to the statement, this understanding framework provides an important basis for promoting mutual trust, respect and regional cooperation, the implementation of which can be helpful for stability in the region.

Pakistan once again clarified that it is committed to its traditional policy of promoting peace, stability and constructive diplomacy in the region. According to the Foreign Office, Islamabad is ready to play a positive and constructive role in building confidence and advancing the dialogue process between Washington and Tehran, if deemed appropriate by the relevant parties.

According to analysts, Pakistan’s balanced diplomatic stance at such a time reflects its policy of prioritising dialogue, diplomacy and international cooperation over the use of force to resolve regional disputes. Pakistan has consistently emphasised that lasting peace in the Middle East is possible only through political reconciliation and mutual trust.
