LAHORE: Amidst a blistering heatwave gripping the province, the Punjab Education Minister, Rana Sikandar Hayat, has officially announced a three-month-long summer vacation for all public and private schools.
The decision comes as a strategic move to protect students from the extreme temperatures and health risks associated with the prevailing “heat emergency” across various districts.
The Official Schedule: Key Dates to Remember
According to the statement released by the Minister’s spokesperson and confirmed via his official social media handles, the holiday schedule is as follows:
| Event | Official Date |
|---|---|
| Vacations Begin | May 22, 2026 |
| Vacations End | August 23, 2026 |
| Schools Reopen | August 24, 2026 |
PDMA Directives and Safety Protocols
The announcement follows urgent warnings from the Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA). With the mercury rising significantly over the past few weeks, the PDMA had advised the provincial government to either alter school timings or declare early holidays to mitigate the impact of the heatwave on young children.
In the days leading up to May 22, the Ministry has mandated that all educational institutions must:
- Suspend Outdoor Activities: All sports and outdoor assemblies are strictly prohibited.
- Ensure Hydration: Schools must provide uninterrupted access to clean, cold drinking water.
- Climate Control: Functional fans and proper ventilation in classrooms are now a mandatory requirement.
- Uniform Flexibility: Students are encouraged to wear loose-fitting, light-colored clothing to prevent heatstroke.
A Proactive Approach to Student Safety
Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat emphasized that the health of the students remains the government’s top priority. “The intensity of the weather requires us to be proactive. We are ensuring that our children stay safe at home during the peak of the summer,” the Minister stated in his Facebook post.
Parents and school administrations have been urged to comply with these dates strictly. Monitoring teams will reportedly visit various districts to ensure that no private institution violates the holiday directive.
