Punjab government reviews summer vacation plans and heatwave prevention measures.

Lahore: The Punjab government is likely to declare summer vacations for schools from May 22 to August 2 as authorities assess the impact of rising temperatures and a possible heatwave across the province.

Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat told reporters that the final decision regarding summer vacations will be taken on May 11 after reviewing the weather forecast and administrative recommendations.

He said that officials are also considering starting summer camps to bridge the learning gap and continue limited educational activities during the holidays.

According to sources in the education department, the Eid-ul-Adha holidays are expected to be between May 27 and 29. Since the next two days coincide with the weekend holidays, there is a strong possibility of schools being closed from May 27.

Officials said that the move is being considered as reopening schools before the scheduled summer holidays may not be practical in extreme weather conditions.

The Punjab Disaster Management Authority has already issued a weather advisory warning of above-normal temperatures and possible heatwave from May to July.

The minister further revealed that the government is reviewing proposals to reduce holidays in the academic calendar and increase the number of academic days from 180 to 190.
