New digital transit system in the Strait of Hormuz, stricter shipping rules

Iran has decided to introduce a new digital control system for ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, under which each ship will now receive specific email instructions before travelling.

According to the new system, it will be mandatory to obtain a transit permit to cross the Strait of Hormuz, and each ship will have to travel according to pre-determined rules and regulations. The aim of this measure is said to be to digitalise maritime traffic monitoring and make security controls more effective.

According to officials, this framework is being implemented to regulate the use of the sea passage as well as improve control over the sensitive sea route.

The Strait of Hormuz is a vital route for global energy supplies, carrying large amounts of oil and trade goods from around the world. Experts say the new system could have an impact on shipping companies’ operations and the international supply chain.

Iranian officials have made it clear that action could be taken against ships that violate the new rules, but detailed enforcement procedures will be announced later.
