Lahore: The recent decline in sugar prices in Pakistan has provided temporary relief to consumers, with wholesale prices falling sharply and retail prices also expected to fall.
According to traders, there are ample reserves of sugar available across the country, including about 150,000 tonnes of imported sugar, which has helped improve supply and keep prices under control.
Wholesale sugar prices in Punjab have reached Rs 145 per kg, while in Karachi the prices are hovering between Rs 146 and Rs 150 per kg. Market participants say that continuous crackdowns on hoarders have ended the artificial shortage.
According to economists, the real benefit of price cuts will be realized only when the reduction in wholesale rates is directly transmitted to the retail market. They say that continued government supervision is essential for price stability.
