Islamabad: Leader of the Opposition Senate Shibli Faraz has written a letter to Chief Justice of Pakistan Yahya Afridi expressing serious concerns over the judicial proceedings of the May 9 cases.

In his letter, Shibli Faraz took the position that basic human rights are being violated in these cases and the role of the police and prosecution appears biased and pressured.

He wrote that elements such as selective registration of cases, tampering with evidence and unusual court hours are making the process of justice suspect. Especially, conducting cases from 3 to 4 am and giving verdicts without lawyers is a very worrying practice.

Shibli Faraz pointed out in the letter that in some cases, government lawyers are being forcibly appointed while proceedings are being conducted behind closed doors, which directly affects the transparency of justice.

He demanded that the Chief Justice conduct an impartial inquiry into the May 9 cases and ensure a transparent trial. He said, “The judiciary is the guardian of the constitution and it is your responsibility to maintain the standard of justice.”
