Islamabad: The government’s progress on the 27th Constitutional Amendment has accelerated as the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) has announced its support for the amendment after the Prime Minister’s assurance.

According to sources, the members will be briefed on the 27th Constitutional Amendment in the next meeting of the federal cabinet, while the bill is likely to be presented in the Senate session tomorrow.

Today, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met with coalition parties to gain their confidence in the amendment. During the meeting, the Prime Minister assured the MQM that their proposed points of the local government system will be made part of the amendment.

Following this assurance, the MQM not only supported the amendment but also promised to help the government in getting the support of other coalition parties.

The MQM stressed that the new local governments should be given financial, political and administrative powers, the term should be fixed at four years, and the elections should be held under a caretaker setup.

In addition, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also held separate meetings with delegations from the Istiqlal Pakistan Party (IPP), Q-League and Balochistan Awami Party (BAP) to discuss political stability and legislative issues.

According to analysts, if the consensus of the coalition parties remains, the 27th Constitutional Amendment could lead to strengthening the local government system in the country and improving governance.
