The fiscal year 2025-26 is a significant landmark in Pakistan’s digital economy, marking the first time in history that Pakistan’s freelance community has generated a first-ever foreign exchange of $1.76 billion. The data shows that freelancers’ earnings from export activities grew by 78 percent from the previous fiscal year, reflecting the fast growth of this sector.

The data shows that Pakistani freelancers have generated $164 million of export earnings just in June 2026. In the month of June, the sector’s earnings rose 69 percent on a yearly basis, which indicates the increasing participation of Pakistani freelancers in the international market.

Official records show that the export earnings of freelancers in the fiscal year (FY) 2024-25 stood at $985 million, increasing from $505 million during the fiscal year (FY) 2023-24. Thus, there has been a continuous significant increase in the exports of digital services in two years.

Likewise, during the fiscal year 2022-23, Pakistani freelancers took home $364 million in foreign exchange. Subsequently, significant growth every year has made this sector one of the important pillars of Pakistan’s emerging digital economy.

Experts state that this expansion in freelancing is due to the rising demand for Pakistani online professionals, IT experts, software developers, graphic designers, digital marketers and other online professionals around the world. These are the areas that, if more focus is given to Internet infrastructure, digital payments and skills training, can be a bigger earner for Pakistan’s foreign exchange in the future.

Analysts say that the unprecedented amount of earnings from freelance jobs is indicative of the power of the digital economy and is also considered a positive step towards the government’s vision of boosting Pakistan’s IT and services exports. This trend can also prove to be very important in providing new jobs to the youth of Pakistan and enhance the nation’s potential in the global digital market.
