Karachi – Overseas Pakistanis have once again expressed their confidence in the country’s economy by sending record levels of remittances to Pakistan during May 2026, further strengthening the country’s foreign exchange reserves and balance of payments.

According to available data, overseas Pakistanis sent a total of over $4.25 billion in remittances to Pakistan in the month of May, which is considered to be the highest amount received in a single month in the country’s history.

In line with the expectations expressed in advance by Governor of State Bank Jamil Ahmed, overseas Pakistanis remitted a large amount of money home ahead of Eid-ul-Adha for the needs of their families and for sacrificial arrangements.

According to the data, Saudi Arabia continued to be the largest source of remittances for Pakistan, where resident Pakistanis sent $1.2 billion home during May. The United Arab Emirates came in second, receiving $1.66 billion in remittances.

Similarly, Pakistanis living in the UK sent $640 million to Pakistan, while Pakistanis living in various European Union countries sent $460 million. Thus, the total remittances from Europe were close to $1 billion.

According to economists, this extraordinary increase in remittances is not only a reflection of the strong ties of overseas Pakistanis to their homeland, but it is also playing an important role in meeting Pakistan’s external financial needs.

During the first eleven months of the current fiscal year 2025-26, total remittances have reached $38.21 billion, which is the highest level in the country’s history. This remarkable performance has given the government and financial institutions more confidence in the stability of external accounts.

Economists say that the continuous increase in remittances is playing an important role in containing the current account deficit, supporting the value of the rupee and strengthening foreign exchange reserves.

Government sources say that various facilities introduced for overseas Pakistanis, promotion of digital banking and encouragement of money transfers through legal channels are yielding positive results.

According to experts, if this trend continues, Pakistan’s annual remittances could reach a new historic level by the end of the fiscal year, which would prove to be a significant development for the country’s economy.
