ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced the launch of the National Wheat Policy 2026-2025, which aims to ensure food security in the country and protect the economic interests of farmers.
Chairing a high-level meeting, the Prime Minister said that Pakistan is an agricultural economy, and wheat crop is the backbone of the country’s development. “Farmers are the most important pillar of our economy,” he said, “without their prosperity, the country’s economy cannot develop.”
Shehbaz Sharif said that detailed consultations were held with all provincial governments, industrialists and farmer representatives in the preparation of the policy so that a unified and realistic strategy could be formulated.
According to the announcement, under the new policy, the government will purchase wheat from farmers at Rs 3,500 per maund, while the federal and provincial governments will jointly maintain a strategic reserve of 6.2 million tonnes of wheat.
There will be no restrictions on inter-provincial movement under the policy so that there is no disruption in the supply of wheat to different parts of the country. A National Wheat Monitoring Committee will also be established to monitor the implementation of the policy and submit a report to the Prime Minister every week.
The Prime Minister said that this policy will play an important role in increasing the income of farmers, improving wheat production and ensuring food security for the people.
