Islamabad – The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) will hold a crucial hearing on May 19 to consider a petition regarding quarterly tariff adjustment for the first quarter of the calendar year 2026.

The case focuses on the reduction in key expenditure of the power sector during the period January to March. Official submissions show that there has been a significant reduction of Rs 36.83 billion in capacity payment expenditure, reflecting reduced financial pressure in generation contracts.

Along with this, additional savings have been recorded under system usage charges and market operation fees, which have reduced by a total of about Rs 11.24 billion during the same period.

The petition further highlights that a reduction of Rs 23.51 billion will be adjusted under incremental energy units, suggesting an overall relaxation in the cost structure in the power supply chain.

If the regulator approves these reductions, it is expected to impact consumers across Pakistan, including K-Electric customers, who are likely to see their electricity bills reduced.

However, the final outcome will depend on NEPRA’s assessment after hearing the arguments of all stakeholders. The authority is expected to determine both the scale of relief and the application procedure after a detailed examination of the data submitted.
